Below are the most common issues users encounter with laptop cooling fans. If your problem isn’t listed, please contact our support team.

1. The fan doesn't spin at all

Check the cable connection – re‑seat it firmly. If it still doesn’t spin, the motor may be dead. You can test the fan with a 5V DC source (e.g., USB) to verify – if it still doesn’t spin, replacement is needed.

2. Fan is making loud grinding or rattling noise

This is typically caused by worn‑out bearings or debris stuck in the blades. Try cleaning with compressed air. If noise persists, the bearing is failing – replacement is the only effective solution.

3. Fan runs at full speed constantly (high RPM)

This could be due to a temperature sensor issue or a misconfigured fan curve. Check BIOS settings and update drivers. If the fan is still always on max, the fan’s PWM control may be faulty – replacement may be needed.

4. Fan error at boot (e.g., "Fan failed" or "Fan not detected")

This indicates the motherboard is not receiving a tachometer signal. Reconnect the cable and ensure the pins are not bent. If error persists, the fan’s sensor is defective – replace the fan.

5. Laptop overheats even with fan spinning

The fan may be spinning but not moving enough air due to clogged heatsink fins or dried thermal paste. Clean the heatsink thoroughly and re‑apply thermal paste. If the fan itself is weak, consider replacing it with a higher‑performance model.

6. Fan connector doesn't match the motherboard header

We provide detailed connector photos for each model. If the connector differs, please contact us before installation – we can verify compatibility and exchange if needed. Do not force a mismatched connector.

7. Fan spins briefly then stops

This often indicates a stalled motor or a faulty driver IC. Check for any physical obstruction. If the fan stops after a few seconds, the internal control circuit is failing – replacement is recommended.

Voltage Guide

Voltage	Common Use	Characteristics
5V	Ultrabooks, thin & light laptops	Lower power consumption, quieter, less cooling capacity
12V	Gaming laptops, workstations	Higher cooling performance, more noise, higher power draw
24V	Rare (industrial/specialized)	Not used in standard consumer laptops

Warning: Installing a fan with the wrong voltage will damage the fan or motherboard. Always match voltage exactly!

Current (Amperage) Guide

Current Range	Cooling Level	Typical Laptops
0.2 - 0.3A	Low / Quiet	Ultrabooks, Intel Y-series CPUs
0.3 - 0.5A	Standard / Balanced	Mainstream laptops, Intel U/P-series
0.5 - 0.8A	High / Performance	Gaming laptops, Intel H-series
0.8 - 1.2A+	Extreme / Max Cooling	High-end gaming, workstations

Higher current fans provide more cooling but consume more power and generate more noise.

Understanding the connector type is essential for compatibility. Below are the most common fan interfaces found in laptops.

Connector Type	Pins	Signal / Voltage	Typical Use
2‑pin	2	GND, VCC (5V/12V)	Basic fans, no speed control or monitoring
3‑pin	3	GND, VCC, Tach (speed signal)	Speed monitoring (read RPM), but no active speed control
4‑pin (PWM)	4	GND, VCC, Tach, PWM	Full speed control via PWM signal, common in modern laptops
Proprietary / Custom	Varies	Brand‑specific pinout (e.g., Dell, HP, Lenovo)	Check your original fan's connector carefully — may need adapter

Important: Even if the number of pins matches, the pin assignment or voltage may differ. Compare the wire colors and connector shape with our product photos before ordering.

Pro tip: If your original fan uses a 4‑pin connector but our replacement is 3‑pin, it will still work (speed monitoring only, no PWM control). However, 4‑pin PWM fans are generally preferred for better thermal management.
